This week, we finished our solid prototype which means our system is now housed in a box that can be easily inserted into the cockpit of any plane. We also wrapped up our poster (to the point where we need to tweak it a little on Monday). Cameron is mainly responsible for the beautiful poster, while Gabby and I built and laser cut the prototype. As a group, we also sent out a survey to different Air Traffic Controllers at LAX to get data. The results were amazing! In our survey, we made a decision to not put “Yes” as an option because how are ATCers supposed to know if our system is going to help them without even trying it? Instead, we put “No” and “Maybe” (as in it could possibly help them) as options in our survey. 100% of the people we surveyed said “Maybe”! Next week will be the forum and the start of making our final video. On Monday we are going to make final changes to our poster and website to make sure that they look the best that they can. Published by Cameron Kraus This week we have started building our solution with blocks of code and lights. The light will be red until it is your turn to speak to the air traffic controller, then it will make a noise and the light will turn green. First you will press a button and it will put you on hold, then the light turns red and eventually green. We have spent some of the week building this, while some of the other parts of the week we have been starting our poster. This machine will go inside of every cockpit and be built in of all air traffic control systems eventually. Published by Cameron Kraus
This week we are starting on our initial building process. On Monday we tidied up our website and made some small but important changes. We will continue to make additions and changes to our website including our weekly blog that you are reading right now. We have made major progress this week in my opinion. We are having some difficulty right now, though, figuring out how to build our solution. We were not able to begin on our prototype during class on Friday because there was another class in the studio. McQuaid vastly improved the website and made some cool effects to the text. Published by Gabby Rimokh We started off the week by meeting with and calling several different adults to present our solution. Our solution Is to create a hold system/line. To determine when it is your turn, we are thinking about creating a green and red light. Green signals it is your turn to talk and red means you can’t talk until the light turns green. You may ask, what about emergencies? That is already settled because a transponder is already installed in all aircraft. Next week we will continue finalizing our solution. Published by McQuaid Harkin-Goodrich Our group narrowed the field for our problem and we came up with the idea of trying to solve air traffic congestion around airports. With some help from experts and our teachers, we realized that this issue was a little out of our league and so we settled on a new one. Our finalized idea is trying to fix the one-way radio issue with Air Traffic Control. This issue is where ATC and pilots are all talking at once on the same frequency and therefore cutting everyone off. This is a major issue because sometimes pilots think that they said something but in reality they got cut off by another person. There was a huge accident involving two 747s because of this (See below). We have started brainstorming solutions and our main idea is to have a queue (maybe involving lights) that prioritizes people in the air. A pilot would be wanting to land and they would contact the tower, they would then be informed what number in the queue they were and would receive live updates. When it is their turn, they would have a single member of the tower walk them through landing. While there could be the problem that people need to contact immediately, we will try to find a way around that. Published by Cameron Kraus
Today is the first day in the 2nd week of CBL (Challenge Based Learning). In the past week, our group (3B) has narrowed down our topic from transportation, which alone is a major problem in Los Angeles, then to aviation, because our group enjoys that topic and feels that there is much to do to improve it. Now we are focusing on improving air traffic control and air and airport congestion. While we do not know much about improving the topic, we know that the air traffic control unit is outdated in the way they operate, and we are focusing on finding a solution to that in the next week or few days. These are our amazing 3B group participates: |
