Published by McQuaid Harkin-Goodrich Our group narrowed the field for our problem and we came up with the idea of trying to solve air traffic congestion around airports. With some help from experts and our teachers, we realized that this issue was a little out of our league and so we settled on a new one. Our finalized idea is trying to fix the one-way radio issue with Air Traffic Control. This issue is where ATC and pilots are all talking at once on the same frequency and therefore cutting everyone off. This is a major issue because sometimes pilots think that they said something but in reality they got cut off by another person. There was a huge accident involving two 747s because of this (See below). We have started brainstorming solutions and our main idea is to have a queue (maybe involving lights) that prioritizes people in the air. A pilot would be wanting to land and they would contact the tower, they would then be informed what number in the queue they were and would receive live updates. When it is their turn, they would have a single member of the tower walk them through landing. While there could be the problem that people need to contact immediately, we will try to find a way around that.
